Converting Doors

Did you know that every ADA-compliant doorway needs to be at least 32 inches wide? And while that’s a standard doorway size, you may need a wider door or a different style of door to accommodate your aging-in-place needs.

Access Ramps

If you or a loved one needs an ADA ramp to enter or exit their home, ramps can be custom designed, installed and finished to match your home’s exterior.  For those with limited mobility or walking difficulties, this could be exactly what is needed to remain independent and safe at home.

Improved Lighting

There’s more to accessibility than movement. Our aging bodies can also make it more difficult to see well. Upgraded lighting in the form of extra lights, task lighting, additional natural lighting, or simply better fixtures that produce more light can really make a difference.

Different Flooring

When it comes to accessibility, we commonly think of grab bars and ramps, but flooring can also be a big part of making it easier to get around. Keep in mind things like slip-resistance, cushioning from a fall, or flooring choices that make wheelchair or walker use easier.

Grab Bars

This addition can be as much a style accessory as it is functional. Even some everyday things now double as grab assist bars like towel bars or toilet paper holders.  Grab bars are great for more than just your aging family members—people of all ages can benefit from an assist bar in their bathroom, near the shower, near steps, or even at the entry to the home.  It never hurts to be a little steadier on your feet.

Converting Your Shower

One of the top remodeling projects for aging generations is converting their bathroom from tub to shower as tubs can be difficult to get in and out of.  If space allows, a new, full-size walk-in shower is perfect.  There are two basic kinds of walk-in showers: curbless, ramped, and low threshold. For those with mobility issues, the curbless or ramped shower is preferred.  For those who are looking for solutions with limited space or don’t have mobility issues, a low threshold option is very appealing.

Elevating Toilets

Many older adults find it hard to get up and down, which can make bathing and other activities difficult. An elevated toilet can make going to the bathroom easier, improving comfort and reducing risk of falls but, toilet heights can be confusing so let’s clean that up.  Tall or limited mobility users need a height of 19-22”, ADA Compliant or ‘Comfort Height’ is 16-18”, standard height toilets are 14-15” and toilets for children or little people are 10-14”.  Regardless of your needs, choose the option that best suits you and your situation.

Counters & Cabinets

As we age, it gets harder to access overhead cabinets and prepare food on standard height countertops. For those who are wheelchair bound or need to work in a seat situation, lowering countertops and cabinets as well as adding cabinet amenities that allow the contents to be brought down to a reachable level are common solutions.  For those who prefer to do these tasks in a standing position, to protect from back and neck issues, countertops can be raised, and cabinet amenities can still be added for ease in reaching.  Not only can you upgrade your kitchen with these changes, but we can do this and still give you a pleasing and beautiful space.
